By
the end of the century, a significant French community was soundly
anchored into the fabric of the city of San Francisco. The life
of our “Paris by the Bay” was influenced not so much
directly by France, as it was from the inside by her own French
element. The Poodle Dog restaurant, the City of Paris, the White
House, were a few of her most prominent French landmarks. French-owned
banks, hotels, wine-stores, hotels and restaurants; French-owned
fashion stores, laundries, cafes, and a myriad of other such boutiques
were an intrinsic part of San Francisco’s life. Los Angeles
and San Jose also counted a strong French element in their populations.
